NHS Hospital Admission Rates by Ethnic Group and other Characteristics

CDRC requested NHS Digital to link CDRC Ethnicity Estimator software (EE) to Hospital Episode Statistics (HES) data collected between 1999/00 and 2013/14.
See the documentation for details about the completeness of ethnicity records and the prediction success of the EE software for different ethnic groups. Two datasets were produced in this project:

  1. Preventable hospitalisation admission rates by ethnic group; and
  2. Hospital admission rates for major disease categories as defined in the Global Burden of Disease project.

Preventable hospitalisation admission by ethnic group

Ambulatory care sensitive conditions (ACSC) are regarded as preventable admissions. Higher rates have been associated with patients under the age 5 years, the elderly, deprivation and ethnicity. The dataset contains age- and sex-standardised hospital admission incidence rates by ethnic group and local authority district for acute ambulatory care sensitive conditions (acute, chronic, and vaccine-preventable combined).

Hospital admission for major disease categories as defined in the Global Burden of Disease project

This datasets holds age-and-sex standardised hospital admission rates for 27 disease categories defined by the Global Burden of Disease (GBD). The rates are disaggregated by ethnic group and local authority for the study period 1999/00-2003/04 and 2009/10-2013/14.
